Sociology of the Arts in Action: New Perspectives on Creation, Production, and Reception
English | 2023 | ISBN: 3031113047 | 485 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 9 MB
This edited collection carries out an extensive coverage of the sociology of arts' most characteristic thematic areas (production, creation, the artwork, and reception) across an important range of artistic fields, from the most traditional to the more unusual. It makes an argument for the theoretical creativity and empirical expansion that characterizes the study of contemporary sociology of the arts. Such creativity is present in the increasingly predominant approach to a sociology of the arts in action, in all areas of inquiry within the discipline. The range of theoretical paradigms evoked is rich, analysing several of the most important theoretical frameworks currently handled in the discipline (Bourdieu, Becker, Peterson, ANT), and combining them with the works of many other influential contemporary specialists (De Nora, Hennion, Lamont, Menger and Born et al.). The book also establishes links to less known theoretical frameworks and some from different fields including economic sociology, microsociology, ethnomethodology, semiotics, and cultural history. The volume argues that Spanish-speaking scholars are now at the forefront of new developments in the field of the sociology of the arts, and is the first effort to gather research by these influential Spanish-language scholars in a single volume for an English-language audience

Xiaojun Yuan, "Social Vulnerability to COVID-19: Impacts of Technology Adoption and Information Behavior "
English | ISBN: 3031068963 | 2023 | 145 pages | PDF | 3 MB
This book provides an overview of the impact of the pandemic in China and the USA and presents a research agenda for use, access, and adoption of information and communication technologies (ICT) in the era of COVID-19. The global COVID-19 pandemic changed lives overnight and exposed socially vulnerable populations to ever-challenging situations. One significant challenge was the use, access, and adoption of technological resources. To understand how socially vulnerable populations managed the COVID-19 pandemic and adapt to the new normal, it is important for researchers and practitioners to identify the challenges and understand the perceptions of technologies. Through various research studies, this edited volume addresses the impact of the global COVID-19 pandemic and the adoption of technologies (from artificial intelligence to telehealth and telecommunications) among some socially vulnerable populations (including children, older adults, COVID-19 patients, and general marginalized populations) in the world. The information divide faced by socially vulnerable groups is studied as well as the dimension of vulnerabilities and the impacts of specific technologies.

Social Value, Climate Change and Environmental Stewardship: Insights from Theory and Practice by William Nikolakis, Renata Moura da Veiga
2023 | ISBN: 3031231449 | English | 150 pages | PDF | 2 MB
This book provides insight on the concept of social value and social return on investment (SROI) - or measures to evaluate the social outcomes from interventions, beyond simply jobs and income. It offers a new and holistic perspective on the values generated from environmental stewardship and forest governance, and focuses on the methods, approaches and outcomes for understanding social value and SROI. The book offers new directions in social value and SROI, including cultural and spiritual outcomes, gender equity, and health and well-being, and provides pathways for implementing interventions and measuring social impact. It includes state of the art approaches from diverse and interdisciplinary experts drawn from academia and professional practice, including the voices and perspectives of Indigenous Peoples and local communities involved in programs, with a focus on environmental stewardship. Social value and SROI are increasingly used to assess outcomes from conservation and this book broadens the conversation on the impact and business case for these interventions. The book offers practical guidance to readers in pursuing social value and those seeking to measure it.

Social Conflict in the Age of Justinian: Its Nature, Management, and Mediation By Peter N. Bell
2013 | 416 Pages | ISBN: 0199567336 | PDF | 7 MB
Our understanding of Late Antiquity can be transformed by the non-dogmatic application of social theory to more traditional evidence when studying major social conflicts in the Eastern Roman Empire, not least under the Emperor Justinian (527-565). Social Conflict in the Age of Justinianexplores a range of often violent conflicts across the whole empire -- on the land, in religion, and in sport -- during this pivotal period in European history. Drawing on both sociology and social psychology, and on his experience as a senior British Civil Servant dealing with violent politicalconflicts in Northern Ireland and elsewhere, Bell shows that such conflicts were a basic feature of the overwhelmingly agricultural political economy of the empire. These conflicts were reflected at the ideological level and lead to intense persecution of intellectuals and Pagans as an ever more robust Christian ideological hegemony was established. In challenging the loyalties of all social classes, they also increased the vulnerability of an emperor and hisallies. The need to legitimise the emperor, through an increasingly sacralised monarchy, and to build a loyal constituency, consequently remained a top priority for Justinian, even if his repeated efforts to unite the churches failed.
