Free Download Ellen Handler Spitz, "Inside Picture Books"
English | 2000 | pages: 245 | ISBN: 0300084765 | PDF | 1,3 mb
Mention a name from a beloved childhood picture book―Madeline, Corduroy, Peter Rabbit, Max and his "wild things"―and most adults can recollect a bright image, fragments of a story, the timbre of a certain reading voice, the sensation of being held, and best of all being together with someone and enveloped in fantasy. Why do picture book images shown to us as young children linger in our minds? How do picture books shape our lives early on and even later into adulthood? This book takes up such questions. It explores the profound impact of the experience of reading to children. Ellen Handler Spitz reveals how classic picture books transmit psychological wisdom, convey moral lessons, shape tastes, and implant subtle prejudices.

Free Download Saitya Brata Das, "Infinite Contestation: Occasional Political Writing"
English | 2018 | pages: 102 | ISBN: 9350025841 | PDF | 0,3 mb
Thinking is not a detached, objective reflection about the world and existence; it also seeks to intervene in the world and transfigure existence. Instead of abstracting eternity from its contamination with time in order to contemplate the truth of eternity in an inviolate way, the philosopher, on the other hand, must intensify temporarily itself to apocalyptically burst itself out of all possible closures in the messianic light of eternity which must come today, hic et nunc, interrupting and yet fulfilling time.

Free Download H. Peyton Young, "Individual Strategy and Social Structure: An Evolutionary Theory of Institutions"
English | 2001 | pages: 208 | ISBN: 0691086877, 069102684X | DJVU | 2,4 mb
Neoclassical economics as-sumes that people are highly rational and can reason their way through even the most complex economic problems. In Individual Strategy and Social Structure, Peyton Young argues for a more realistic view in which people have a limited understanding of their environment, are sometimes short-sighted, and occasionally act in perverse ways. He shows how the cumulative experiences of many such individuals coalesce over time into customs, norms, and institutions that govern economic and social life. He develops a theory that predicts how such institutions evolve and characterizes their welfare properties.

Free Download Mariana Ortega, "In-Between: Latina Feminist Phenomenology, Multiplicity, and the Self"
English | 2016 | ISBN: 1438459769, 1438459777 | EPUB | pages: 296 | 1.1 mb
This original study intertwining Latina feminism, existential phenomenology, and race theory offers a new philosophical approach to understanding selfhood and identity. Focusing on writings by Gloría Anzaldúa, María Lugones, and Linda Martín Alcoff, Mariana Ortega articulates a phenomenology that introduces a conception of selfhood as both multiple and singular. Her Latina feminist phenomenological approach can account for identities belonging simultaneously to different worlds, including immigrants, exiles, and inhabitants of borderlands. Ortega's project forges new directions not only in Latina feminist thinking on such issues as borders, mestizaje, marginality, resistance, and identity politics, but also connects this analysis to the existential phenomenology of Martin Heidegger and to such concepts as being-in-the-world, authenticity, and intersubjectivity. The pairing of the personal and the political in Ortega's work is illustrative of the primacy of lived experience in the development of theoretical understandings of who we are. In addition to bringing to light central metaphysical issues regarding the temporality and continuity of the self, Ortega models a practice of philosophy that draws from work in other disciplines and that recognizes the important contributions of Latina feminists and other theorists of color to philosophical pursuits.

But over the course of the nineteenth and early twentieth century, new technologies began to light up streets, sidewalks, buildings, and public spaces. Peter C. Baldwin's evocative book depicts the changing experience of the urban night over this period, visiting a host of actors-scavengers, newsboys, and mashers alike-in the nocturnal city.

Free Download In the Shadow of Packer: England's Winter Tour of Pakistan and New Zealand 1977/78 By David Battersby
2016 | 1988 Pages | ISBN: 1785311360 | EPUB | 2 MB
On the back of winning the Ashes in the summer of 1977, England headed off on a gruelling and punishing four-month winter tour of Pakistan and New Zealand - the first without the MCC moniker. Events prior to that tour were to have a massive impact on the world of cricket with Kerry Packer having announced, prior to the summer's Ashes, plans to hold his first season of World Series Cricket; which would coincide with the England tour. The Pakistan leg of the tour saw rioting at matches, caused by political unrest in the country. On the pitch, history would be created by the slowest-ever Test century scored by Mudassar Nazar. Skipper Mike Brearley was to head home with a broken arm with Geoff Boycott taking over and captaining England for the first time. Promising youngster Ian Botham recorded a maiden century, and future England captain Mike Gatting made his Test debut. When the tourists arrived in New Zealand they lost to the hosts, led by Mark Burgess, for the first time in Test cricket. In the Shadow of Packer tells the story of this historic and tumultuous tour.

Free Download In the Land of Tigers and Snakes: Living with Animals in Medieval Chinese Religions (The Sheng Yen Series in Chinese Buddhist Studies) by Huaiyu Chen
English | March 21, 2023 | ISBN: 0231202601, 023120261X | True PDF/epub | 288 pages | 12.7 MB
Animals play crucial roles in Buddhist thought and practice. However, many symbolically or culturally significant animals found in India, where Buddhism originated, do not inhabit China, to which Buddhism spread in the medieval period. In order to adapt Buddhist ideas and imagery to the Chinese context, writers reinterpreted and modified the meanings different creatures possessed. Medieval sources tell stories of monks taming wild tigers, detail rituals for killing snakes, and even address the question of whether a parrot could achieve enlightenment.
