Clear Blue Water The Conservative Party and the Welfare State since 1940
Free Download Robert M. Page, "Clear Blue Water?: The Conservative Party and the Welfare State since 1940"
English | 2015 | ISBN: 1847429866 | EPUB | pages: 212 | 1.3 mb
Has the modern Conservative Party developed a distinctive approach to the post-war welfare state? In exploring this question, this accessible book takes an authoritative look at Conservative Party policy and practice in the modern era. The book takes as its main starting point the progressive One Nation Conservative (1950-64) perspective, which endeavoured to embrace those features of the welfare state deemed compatible with the party's underlying 'philosophy'. Attention then shifts to the neo-liberal Conservatives (1974-97), who sought to reverse the forward march of the welfare state on the grounds of its 'harmful' economic and social effects. Finally, David Cameron's (2005-present day) 'progressive' neo-liberal Conservative welfare state strategy is put under the spotlight. The book's time-defined content and broad historical thread make it a valuable resource for academics and students in social policy and politics as well as social history.

Civis romanus sum Citizenship And Empire In Ancient Rome
Free Download Giuseppe Valditara, "Civis romanus sum: Citizenship And Empire In Ancient Rome"
English | 2020 | ISBN: 1680531220 | EPUB | pages: 120 | 1.3 mb
The story of Rome and its people draws on ancient legends passed down from generation to generation. Circulating throughout the Mediterranean world in the centuries after Rome's legendary founding, they were later enshrined in the words of the poets and historians of the great Augustan age and have been studied ever since. Before it was a mighty empire, Rome was born as a Latin settlement on the Palatine Hill and from the beginning showed an inclination to integrating different peoples through a federation. The early legends, born out in fact and in Rome's later history, offered an element of mixed ethnic identity. As Rome expanded its rule across Italy and over the world, adherence to Roman identity and values stood as the main qualifications for "becoming Roman" and enjoying all the privileges of Rome's civilization. As migrant populations traverse today's world, assimilation remains a crucial issue of debate in managing borders and defining societies. As the eminent Italian jurist and educator Giuseppe Valditara shows in this exceptional new book, Rome was born by uniting different peoples all on equal terms and without discrimination and relying on a strong collective identity. To defend this identity and the security of its citizens, not coincidentally, the walls were the first public building. Rome was never racist: people could become citizens and achieve important positions without distinctions of race, religion, or nationality. Rome was a meritocratic society that put state interest first. Its whole politics of citizenship and immigration revolved around this concept. The assimilation of foreigners willing to assimilate. A strong pride in belonging to the community arose at the base of society, through sharing the values and destiny of citizenship.

In 1861, a blast of artillery aimed at Fort Sumter started four years of the most horrendous period in American history. On the morning of April 12th, forty three Confederate cannons opened up on the fortress. Miraculously, no one on either side had been killed or seriously wounded - a battle conclusion with these results would rarely happen again. The Confederacy had to struggle to place artillery and ammunition in the field. While the Union had 163 field guns on hand, the Confederacy had only 35 when the war began. Also, most of the gunpowder mills were located in the North. Take a trip through time beginning with the infancy of artillery during the American Revolution until the final shots were fired at Appomattox. Most of the major battles are visited, along with some lesser engagements, and the role that the artillery played regarding their outcome. With over 500 photographs, (many previously unpublished), the reader will get a real feel what it was like to serve with the artillery during the Civil War.

Challenging governance theory From networks to hegemony
Free Download Jonathan S. Davies, "Challenging governance theory: From networks to hegemony"
English | 2011 | ISBN: 184742614X, 1847426158 | EPUB | pages: 200 | 1.3 mb
Theories heralding the rise of network governance have dominated for a generation.Yet, empirical research suggests that claims for the transformative potential of networks are exaggerated. This topical and timely book takes a critical look atcontemporary governance theory, elaborating a Gramscian alternative. It argues that, although the ideology of networks has been a vital element in the neoliberal hegemonic project, there are major structural impediments to accomplishing it. While networkingremains important, the hierarchical and coercive state isvital for the maintenance of social order and integral to the institutions of contemporary governance.Reconsidering it from Marxist and Gramscian perspectives, the book argues that the hegemonic ideology of networks is utopian and rejects the claim that there has been a transformation from 'government' to 'governance'.This important book has international appeal and will be essential reading for scholars and students of governance, public policy, human geography, public management, social policy and sociology.

Caravans Lives on Wheels in Contemporary Europe
Free Download Hege Høyer Leivestad, "Caravans: Lives on Wheels in Contemporary Europe"
English | ISBN: 1350029920 | 2018 | 194 pages | PDF | 9 MB
In Caravans, Hege Høyer Leivestad opens the caravan door to understand how daily life is organised among Britons and Swedes who have relocated, either seasonally or permanently, to mobile homes. Leivestad investigates how the caravan and campsite come to fit and challenge conventional domestic ideals, and how the static mobile caravan can nurture ideas of freedom even when it is standing still. With sensitivity and an awareness of the humour and pathos of the lives of her subjects, Leivestad closely examines the shaping of the European camping phenomenon and its day-to-day pleasures and pains, ranging from friendships ties to conflictive bingo nights, from nosy and noisy neighbours to fake fireplaces and rotten awning floors. As the first ethnographic study of caravan life in Europe, Caravans offers a refreshing take on contemporary mobility debates, showing how movement can best be understood by taking a detailed look at certain specific mundanities in material culture. This rich and topical ethnography is a must-read for students of anthropology, human geography and architecture, and for those with an interest in the possibilities and perils of a life on wheels.

Broad–Area Laser Bars for 1 kW–Emission Demonstrating increased efficiency and narrowed far field
Free Download Broad-Area Laser Bars for 1 kW-Emission: Demonstrating increased efficiency and narrowed far field by Matthias M Karow
English | July 20, 2022 | ISBN: 3736976267 | 142 pages | PDF | 9.35 Mb
Industrial laser systems for material processing applications rely on the availability of highly efficient, high-brightness diode lasers. GaAs-based broad-area laser bars play a vital role in such applications as pump sources for high-beam-quality solid-state lasers and, increasingly, as direct processing tools. This work studies 940 nm-laser bars emitting 1 kW optical power at room temperature, identifying those physical mechanisms that are currently limiting electrical-to-optical conversion efficiency as well as lateral beam quality. In the process, several diagnostic studies on bars with varied lateral-longitudinal design were carried out. The effects of technological measures for performance optimization were analyzed, yielding a new benchmark in efficiency and lateral divergence. The studies into altered resonator lengths of 4 and 6 mm as well as fill factors between 69 and 87 % successfully reduce both the voltage dropping across the device and power saturation at high currents, enabling 66 % efficiency at the operation point. Concrete measures how to reach efficiencies >=70 % are presented thereafter, showing that doubling the efficiency value of the first 1 kW-demonstration in 2007 - amounting to 35 % - is in near reach. Investigation of the beam quality bases on a herein proposed and realized concept, in which the far field is resolved for each individual bar emitter. In this way, it is possible to determine how far-field profiles vary along the bar width and how much these variations affect the overall bar far-field. Further, such effects specific to bar structures can be separated into non-thermal and thermal influences. The effect of mechanical chip deformation (bar smile) as well as neighboring-emitter interaction has been investigated for the first time in active kW-class devices, yielding a lateral divergence as low as 8.8° at the operation point.

Bridging Discourses in the ESL Classroom is concerned with the nature of talk in multilingual classrooms. Examining the interactions between students learning in and through English as a second language and their teachers, this book identifies the patterns of discourse which support and enable both second language development and the learning of curriculum knowledge. These patterns are 'bridging discourses', combining the everyday language used by the student with the specialised language of the academic register.
