Free Download Night without End: The Fate of Jews in German-Occupied Poland (Studies in Antisemitism) by Jan Grabowski, Barbara Engelking, Alina Skibińska
English | September 6, 2022 | ISBN: 0253062861 | 659 pages | PDF | 34 Mb
Three million Polish Jews were murdered in the Holocaust, wiping out nearly 98 percent of the Jewish population who had lived and thrived there for generations. Night Without End tells the stories of their resistance, suffering, and death in unflinching, horrific detail. Based on meticulous research from across Poland, it concludes that those who were responsible for so many deaths included a not insignificant number of Polish villagers and townspeople who aided the Germans in locating and slaughtering Jews.

Free Download Derek Hyde, "New-found Voices: Women in Nineteenth-century English Music"
English | 2018 | ISBN: 1138328804, 1138328820 | EPUB | pages: 226 | 5.0 mb
First published in 1998, this volume by Derek Hyde remedies the lack of information concerning the contribution made by women to musical life in Britain during the nineteenth century in this carefully researched survey. The book reveals the significant role played by women in the production and performance of certain genres of music, such as piano music, songs and ballads, and touches on the reasons why they were more prominent in these areas than in the male preserves of chamber and orchestral music. In particular, the pioneering work of Sarah Glover in Sol-fa notation and the part played by Mary Wakefield in establishing the Competitive Festival Movement are charted.

Free Download Kevin McCarron, "Narratives of Addiction: Savage Usury"
English | ISBN: 3030884600 | 2021 | 248 pages | PDF | 6 MB
Narratives of Addiction: Savage Usury is the first book to argue, in the face of more than a century's received wisdom, that drug addiction and alcoholism are undoubtedly evidence of individual moral flaws. However, the sense of morality that underlies this book is completely severed from Christianity. Instead, it is influenced in particular by the writings of the nineteenth-century German philosophers Arthur Schopenhauer and Frederick Nietzsche, both of whom insisted that a genuine morality was actually incompatible with Christianity. The sequence of chapters moves from addictions on the streets, into rehab clinics, and finally into the meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. This is the first book to argue that the search for pleasure drives alcoholism and drug addiction and not the "numbing of pain". Throughout the book I reject the claims of the medical profession, as embodied by the American Medical Association, that drug addiction and alcoholism are diseases, and further argue that they do not have the authority to tell hundreds of millions of Americans that addiction is not a moral failing. I also query throughout the book the claims of neuroscience, psychology, and the social sciences that addictions to alcohol and drugs are attributable to causes that their specific disciplines are best suited to understand. I argue that there is nothing complex about addiction: it is a simple behavioural disorder. The language routinely employed to discuss addiction is similarly not complex, just confused, and so it is also the rhetoric of addiction discourse, especially its use of simile, metaphor and euphemism, that this book evaluates.

Free Download G. O. Hutchinson, "Motion in Classical Literature: Homer, Parmenides, Sophocles, Ovid, Seneca, Tacitus, Art"
English | 2020 | pages: 328 | ISBN: 0198855621 | PDF | 2,0 mb
Classical literature is full of humans, gods, and animals in impressive motion. The specific features of this motion are expressive; it is closely intertwined with decisions, emotions, and character. However, although the importance of space has recently been realized with the advent of the 'spatial turn' in the humanities, motion has yet to receive such attention, for all its prominence in literature and its interest to ancient philosophy.
