The History Of The Rifle Brigade, The Prince Consort's Own Formerly The 95th
Free Download William Henry Cope, "The History Of The Rifle Brigade, The Prince Consort's Own: Formerly The 95th"
English | 2010 | ISBN: 1166337723 | EPUB | pages: 604 | 1.3 mb
In this book, originally published in 1877, late lieutenant William Henry Cope recounts the trials and tribulations of the Rifle Brigade (The Prince Consort's Own) in which he served. An infantry rifle regiment of the British Army that was formed in Jan. 1800 as the "Experimental Corps of Riflemen" to provide sharpshooters, scouts and skirmishers (soon renamed the "Rifle Corps"). In 1816, at the end of the Napoleonic Wars, they were again renamed, this time as the "Rifle Brigade". The unit was distinguished by its use of green uniforms as standard in place of the traditional redcoat, as well as being armed with the first British-made rifle accepted by the British Army, in place of smoothbore muskets. Cope carries his narrative on through the Crimean War, the Indian Mutiny and postings to the far-flung corners of the British Empire to 1870.

The Employment Impact of China's WTO Accession
Free Download A. S. Bhalla, Shufang Qiu, "The Employment Impact of China's WTO Accession"
English | 2003 | ISBN: 0415308399, 1138371246 | EPUB | pages: 224 | 1.3 mb
The book explores the macroeconomic and sectoral employment implications (in agriculture, industry and services) of China's World Trade Organisation accession. It argues that while short-run employment losses may occur, in the longer term China will be able to generate additional employment particularly in the tertiary sectors; and that it can maintain its comparative advantage in labour-intensive exports by relocating production from high-cost coastal areas to the hinterland with abundant supply of cheap labour.

State Under Siege Development And Policy Making In Peru
Free Download Philip Mauceri, "State Under Siege: Development And Policy Making In Peru"
English | 2018 | ISBN: 0813336074, 0813327539 | EPUB | pages: 192 | 1.3 mb
Using a framework that highlights how societal and international factors have shaped state capacities, Philip Mauceri examines the volatile politics in Peru from the Velasco through the Fujimori regimes as the country has moved from a ?developmentalist? state to neoliberalism.Dr. Mauceri begins by reassessing the reformist experiment of the Peruvian military regime (1968?1980), arguing that it led to the development of unexpected challenges to state authority, both from new social actors and international financial organizations. During the 1980s, these challenges intensified, made even worse by poor planning and limited policy choices. The author then argues that the attempt by the Fujimori regime, backed by a neoliberal coalition, to ?retool? the state indicates the degree to which state capacities are determined by social and international conditions. Mauceri also gives special attention to the relation between changing state power and social control. Separate chapters on the evolution of a Lima shantytown and the Shining Path examine how changes in state-society relations have had impacts at the grassroots level.

State Structure, Policy Formation, and Economic Development in Southeast Asia
Free Download Antoinette R. Raquiza, "State Structure, Policy Formation, and Economic Development in Southeast Asia: The Political Economy of Thailand and the Philippines"
English | 2011 | ISBN: 0415617677, 0415728347 | EPUB | pages: 204 | 1.3 mb
Why do some small, developing countries industrialize and others don't? What factors account for different economic performance among states that are vulnerable to external shocks, crony capitalism, and political instability? This book argues that the answer lies in the structuring of state power, specifically the way different sets of governing elites - political leaders and economic technocrats - are embedded in political organisations and state institutions, and the way these elites relate to each other in the economic development policy process. Conducting a comparative historical analysis of Thailand and the Philippines, the book argues that the institutional settings of governing elites influence economic outcomes. In Thailand, political power traditionally connects to state institutions in ways that has limited the impact of political turnovers and global downturns - conducive to long-term industrial activities. In contrast, Philippine state power derives from family networks that merge social and political power, suited to fast-moving, short-term commercial interests. In focusing on this political and institutional story, the author analyses the current development dilemmas of countries, weighed down by historical legacies of unstable regimes, dependency, and social conflict, and how they are likely to develop in the future.

Soviet Diplomacy And Negotiating Behavior

English | 2019 | ISBN: 0367303647, 0367288184 | EPUB | pages: 604 | 1.3 mb
"The foreign affairs book of the season ... an absorbing review of the nitty-gritty of Soviet-American diplomacy over the years."―Stephen S. Rosenfeld, The Washington Post "Vast in its historical sweep. . . . Focusing on the period since the Bolshevik Revolution, Whelan stresses five themes: the nature of negotiating behavior, its principal characteristics, elements contributing to its formation, aspects of continuity and change during more than 60 years, and the implications of the record for U.S. foreign policy in the 1980s. "The bulk of the book traces Soviet diplomacy under Chicherin and Litvinov, the enormously complex and detailed wartime conferences with Stalin, the descent into the cold war, the transition to peaceful coexistence with Nikita Krushchev (including fascinating details on the Cuban Missile Crisis), peaceful coexistence with Leonid Brezhnev (including extensive chronological analysis of the SALT process) and finally, judgements about how U.S. policy should be informed in future un- dertakings with the Soviets."―Nish Jamgotch, Jr., The American Political Science Review
