Free Download The Political Arrays of American Indian Literary History By James H. Cox
2019 | 272 Pages | ISBN: 1517906016 | PDF | 3 MB
Bringing fresh insight to a century of writing by Native AmericansThe Political Arrays of American Indian Literary History challenges conventional views of the past one hundred years of Native American writing, bringing Native American Renaissance and post-Renaissance writers into conversation with their predecessors. Addressing the political positions such writers have adopted, explored, and debated in their work, James H. Cox counters what he considers a "flattening" of the politics of American Indian literary expression and sets forth a new method of reading Native literature in a vexingly politicized context.Examining both canonical and lesser-known writers, Cox proposes that scholars approach these texts as "political arrays": confounding but also generative collisions of conservative, moderate, and progressive ideas that together constitute the rich political landscape of American Indian literary history. Reviewing a broad range of genres including journalism, short fiction, drama, screenplays, personal letters, and detective fiction-by Lynn Riggs, Will Rogers, Sherman Alexie, Thomas King, Leslie Marmon Silko, Louise Erdrich, Winona LaDuke, Carole laFavor, and N. Scott Momaday-he demonstrates that Native texts resist efforts to be read as advocating a particular set of politicsMeticulously researched, The Political Arrays of American Indian Literary History represents a compelling case for reconceptualizing the Native American Renaissance as a literary-historical constellation. By focusing on post-1968 Native writers and texts, argues Cox, critics have often missed how earlier writers were similarly entangled, hopeful, frustrated, contradictory, and unpredictable in their political engagements.

Free Download The Old English Heptateuch and Ælfric's Libellus de veteri Testamento et novo: volume I: 1 By Richard Marsden (editor)
2008 | 409 Pages | ISBN: 0199561435 | PDF | 31 MB
The Old English Heptateuch is a translation of much of the first seven books of the Old Testament from the Latin Vulgate into Old English, done in the first years of the eleventh century. It is the earliest known attempt at continuous translation of the Old Testament into English, and is of particular interest as a witness to the dynamic, but not yet fully understood relationship between Latin and the vernacular in the monasteries of late Anglo-Saxon England. The Heptateuch is a composite work, but much of the translation was done by Abbot Ælfric of Eynsham. The edition includes his preface to the translation of Genesis, and also his Libellus de veteri testamento et novo, a tract in which he presents an exegetical survey of the Bible. This first volume contains the general Introduction and the text; volume II will provide the notes and glossary. This new critical edition, based on Bodleian Library MS Laud misc. 509, replaces the EETS' original series 160, edited by S.J. Crawford and based on a different manuscript; it collates manuscripts and adds readings not then known. Richard Marsden is Senior Lecturer in the School of English Studies at the University of Nottingham.

Free Download The Making of the Mosaic: A History of Canadian Immigration Policy By Ninette Kelley, Michael J. Trebilcock
1998 | 704 Pages | ISBN: 0802043232 | PDF | 35 MB
Immigration policy has always been and continues to be a subject of intense political and public debate. This book examines the ideas, interests, institutions, and rhetoric that have shaped Canada's immigration history.Beginning their study in the pre-Confederation period, the authors tell of the dramatic transformations that have characterized our attitudes towards immigrants. While, at first, few obstacles were placed in the way of newcomers to Canada, the turn of the century brought policies of increasing selectivity. The massive deportations of the First World War and Depression eras were exceeded in harshness only by the tactics implemented during the Second World War, when nearly all of the Japanese-Canadian population was incarcerated and when Jewish refugees fleeing from mass extermination abroad were turned away from our shores.Bringing us up to date with an analysis of the more expansionary policies of the 1990s, the authors clarify the central issues and attitudes underlying each phase and juncture of policy decision-making. Their thoughtful study reveals a set of core normative and ethical values that have been fundamental in the making of the Canadian mosaic.

Cyclical language change is a linguistic process by which a word, phrase, or part of the grammar loses its meaning or function and is then replaced by another. This new text is a comprehensive introduction to this phenomenon, the mechanisms underlying it, and the relations between the different types of cycles. Elly van Gelderen reviews the subject widely and holistically, defining key terms and comprehensively presenting diverse theoretical perspectives and empirical findings.
