This handbook is inspired by occasional questions from my stu dents and coworkers as to how they can obtain easily the best network functions from which they can complete their filter design projects to satisfy certain criteria. They don't need any help to design the filter. They need only the network function. It appears that this crucial step can be a bottleneck to designers. This handbook is meant to supply the information for those who need a quick answer to a simple question of this kind. There are three most useful basic standard low-pass magnitude characteristics used in filter design. These are the Butterworth, the Chebyshev, and the elliptic characteristics. The Butterworth charac teristic is maximally flat at the origin. The Chebyshev characteristic gives equal-ripple variation in the pass band. The elliptic character istic gives equal-ripple variation in both the pass band and the stop band. The Butterworth and the Chebyshev characteristics are fairly easy to use, and formulas for their parameters are widely available and fairly easy to apply. The theory and derivation of formulas for the elliptic characteristic, however, are much more difficult to handle and understand. This is chiefly because their original development made use of the Jacobian elliptic functions, which are not familiar to most electrical engineers. Although there are several other methods of developing this characteristic, such as the potential analogy, the Chebyshev rational functions, and numerical techniques, most filter designers are as unfamiliar with these methods as they are with the elliptic functions.

Elliptic Extensions in Statistical and Stochastic Systems

Hermite's theorem makes it known that there are three levels of mathematical frames in which a simple addition formula is valid. They are rational, q-analogue, and elliptic-analogue. Based on the addition formula and associated mathematical structures, productive studies have been carried out in the process of q-extension of the rational (classical) formulas in enumerative combinatorics, theory of special functions, representation theory, study of integrable systems, and so on. Originating from the paper by Date, Jimbo, Kuniba, Miwa, and Okado on the exactly solvable statistical mechanics models using the theta function identities (1987), the formulas obtained at the q-level are now extended to the elliptic level in many research fields in mathematics and theoretical physics. In the present monograph, the recent progress of the elliptic extensions in the study of statistical and stochastic models in equilibrium and nonequilibrium statistical mechanics and probability theory is shown.

Rational Points on Elliptic Curves

In 1961 the second author deliv1lred a series of lectures at Haverford Col lege on the subject of "Rational Points on Cubic Curves. " These lectures, intended for junior and senior mathematics majors, were recorded, tran scribed, and printed in mimeograph form. Since that time they have been widely distributed as photocopies of ever decreasing legibility, and por tions have appeared in various textbooks (Husemoller [1], Chahal [1]), but they have never appeared in their entirety. In view of the recent inter est in the theory of elliptic curves for subjects ranging from cryptogra phy (Lenstra [1], Koblitz [2]) to physics (Luck-Moussa-Waldschmidt [1]), as well as the tremendous purely mathematical activity in this area, it seems a propitious time to publish an expanded version of those original notes suitable for presentation to an advanced undergraduate audience.

Acoustic Invisibility for Elliptic Objects
Acoustic Invisibility for Elliptic Objects: Theory and Experiments for Underwater Sound
English | 2023 | ISBN: 303122602X | 200 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 20 MB
The book investigates acoustic cloaking for elliptical targets, starting from the development of a systematic approach to deal with such non-axisymmetrical shapes by adopting transformation acoustics in elliptic coordinates, and concluding with numerical and experimental validation of a microstructured cloak in the underwater environment. The book thus comprises all the steps from theory to practice that led to the first experimental validation of acoustic invisibility for non-cylindrical objects, whose results are presented in the last chapter. Indeed, despite Transformation Theory is now an established tool to design material distributions capable to unlock the design of invisibility devices, it is not trivial to apply it for shapes different than the sphere and the cylinder, which are thus the ones mainly addressed in the literature. This book paves the way for exploration of other shapes, demonstrating the effectiveness of a pentamode cloak in reducing the acoustic visibility of an elliptical target, and discussing design choices that can make the implementation of the required microstructure less cumbersome despite the lack of axial symmetry of the problem, from both the numerical and manufacturing point of views.
