This book examines the connections and conversations between women writers from the twentieth century and the twenty-first century. The essays consider the ways in which twenty-first-century women writers look back and respond to their predecessors within the field of contemporary women's writing. The book looks back to the foundations of contemporary women's writing and also considers how this category may be defined in future decades. We ask how writers and readers have interpreted 'the contemporary', a moving target and an often-contentious term, especially in light of feminist theory and criticism of the late twentieth century. Writing about the relationships between women's writings is an always-vital, ongoing political project with a rich history. These essays argue that establishing and defining the contemporary is, for women writers, another ongoing political project to which this collection of essays aims, in part, to contribute.

Black Feminism and Traumatic Legacies in Contemporary African American Literature
Free Download Apryl Lewis, "Black Feminism and Traumatic Legacies in Contemporary African American Literature "
English | ISBN: 1666921386 | 2023 | 158 pages | PDF | 938 KB
Black Feminism and Traumatic Legacies in Contemporary African American Literature employs an analysis of select African American novels and applies trauma studies and Black Feminist Studies to explain the significance of trauma and traumatic experiences that stem from slavery and how this advances scholarly discussions about African American literature. Using the crooked room theory from Melissa Harris-Perry's Sister Citizen (2011), the author argues that the traumatic legacy of slavery is the "crooked room" that African Americans, especially Black women, are forced to navigate to facilitate healing. Much like trauma, healing is not a linear concept, and healing is more about reclaiming oneself in the aftermath of traumatic experiences. An intersectional approach facilitated by Black Feminist Studies is pivotal for uplifting the traumatic experiences of African Americans, especially women, that does justice to their specific histories. Although slavery is pushed out of public awareness because of people who are uncomfortable with confronting slavery's traumatic magnitude on the Black community, African American literature is not removed from discussing past and present traumas that are pervasive in the Black community.

Precolonial Legacies in Postcolonial Politics Representation and Redistribution in Decentralized West Africa
Free Download Martha Wilfahrt, "Precolonial Legacies in Postcolonial Politics: Representation and Redistribution in Decentralized West Africa "
English | ISBN: 1316518159 | 2021 | 300 pages | PDF | 11 MB
Why are some communities able to come together to improve their collective lot while others are not? Looking at variation in local government performance in decentralized West Africa, this book advances a novel answer to this question: communities are better able to coordinate around basic service delivery when their formal jurisdictional boundaries overlap with informal social institutions, or norms. This book identifies the precolonial past as the driver of striking subnational variation in the present because these social institutions only encompass the many villages of the local state in areas that were once home to precolonial polities. Drawing on a multi-method research design, the book develops and tests a theory of institutional congruence to document how the past shapes contemporary elite approaches to redistribution within the local state. Where precolonial kingdoms left behind collective identities and dense social networks, local elites find it easier to cooperate following decentralization.

Wings in Orbit Scientific and Engineering Legacies of the Space Shuttle, 1971–2010
Free Download Wayne Hale, Helen Lane, Gail Chapline, "Wings in Orbit: Scientific and Engineering Legacies of the Space Shuttle, 1971-2010"
English | 2011 | pages: 570 | ISBN: 1470031345 | PDF | 158,8 mb
The Space Shuttle is an engineering marvel perhaps only exceeded by the station itself. The shuttle was based on the technology of the 1960s and early 1970s. It had to overcome significant challenges to make it reusable. Perhaps the greatest challenges were the main engines and the Thermal Protection System. The program has seen terrible tragedy in its 3 decades of operation, yet it has also seen marvelous success. One of the most notable successes is the Hubble Space Telescope, a program that would have been a failure without the shuttle's capability to rendezvous, capture, repair, as well as upgrade. Now Hubble is a shining example of success admired by people around the world. As the program comes to a close, it is important to capture the legacy of the shuttle for future generations. That is what "Wings In Orbit" does for space fans, students, engineers, and scientists. This book, written by the men and women who made the program possible, will serve as an excellent reference for building future space vehicles. We are proud to have played a small part in making it happen. Our journey to document the scientific and engineering accomplishments of this magnificent winged vehicle began with an audacious proposal: to capture the passion of those who devoted their energies to its success while answering the question "What are the most significant accomplishments?" of the longest operating human spaceflight program in our nation's history. This is intended to be an honest, accurate, and easily understandable account of the research and innovation accomplished during the era.

In 1511, a Portuguese expedition under the command of Afonso de Albuquerque arrived on the shores of Malacca, taking control of the prosperous Malayan port-city after a swift military campaign. Portugal, a peripheral but then technologically advanced country in southwestern Europe since the latter fifteenth century, had been in the process of establishing solid outposts all along Asia's littoral in order to participate in the most active and profitable maritime trading routes of the day. As it turned out, the Portuguese presence and influence in the Malayan Peninsula and elsewhere in continental and insular Asia expanded far beyond the sphere of commerce and extended over time well into the twenty-first century.

Free Download Laura Jarnagin, "Portuguese and Luso-Asian Legacies in Southeast Asia, 1511-2011, Vol. 1: The Making of the Luso-Asian World: Intricacies of Engagement"

Five hundred years later, a conference held in Singapore brought together a large group of scholars from widely different national, academic and disciplinary contexts, to analyse and discuss the intricate consequences of Portuguese interactions in Asia over the longue durée. The result of these discussions is a stimulating set of case studies that, as a rule, combine original archival and/or field research with innovative historiographical perspectives. Luso-Asian communities, real and imagined, and Luso-Asian heritage, material and symbolic, are studied with depth and insight. The range of thematic, chronological and geographic areas covered in these proceeding is truly remarkable, showing not only the extraordinary relevance of revisiting Luso-Asian interactions in the longer term, but also the surprising dynamism within an area of studies which seemed on the verge of exhaustion. After all, archives from all over the world, from Rio de Janeiro to London, from Lisbon to Rome, and from Goa to Macao, might still hold some secrets on the subject of Luso-Asian relations, when duly explored by resourceful scholars.
