Tracks, Paths and Roads Infrastructure and Transport in Finland and the Baltic Sea Area from the Viking Age to Medieval Times
Free Download Tracks, Paths and Roads: Infrastructure and Transport in Finland and the Baltic Sea Area from the Viking Age to Medieval Times (800-1500 AD) By Jaakko Masonen
1995 | 42 Pages | ISBN: 9517260652 | PDF | 19 MB
Translation: Sari Hänninen. The study of early road history in Finland is a synthesis based on indirect archeological evidence, retrospective interpretation of historical data, topography, and the general economic and transport history of the entire Baltic Sea.The economic importance of the Baltic Sea area increased in the early 9th century with the opening of the eastern and western navigation routes of the Vikings. Regular trade began, and uninhabited trading and market places, as well as transport routes became established. For Finland, this meant the establishment of land routes between the inland and the regions inhabited by the coastal tribes. Rights of way were defined, and the upkeep of these routes was organized by the tribal parish system. The Viking Age land routes can be outlined on the basis of the links between the centers of production and the analysis of human geography. The trade links of the Baltic changed in the beginning of the 11th century. In the east, Novgorod was interested in expanding its sphere of influence at the cost of the eastern Finnish tribes. The cultural area of the Western Finns had by then gained a more western orientation. In the 12th century, the affinity between the east and the west was turning into a conflict of interests involving trade policy and political ambitions, which was made all the more acute by the struggle for power between the churches. This new stage of development also involved the introduction of the concept of 'ancient towns' or merely trading villages with permanent and regularly used routes between those towns and their spheres of influence.

North Korea and Myanmar Divergent Paths
Free Download North Korea and Myanmar: Divergent Paths By Andray Abrahamian
2018 | 246 Pages | ISBN: 1476673705 | PDF | 3 MB
North Korea and Myanmar (Burma) are Asia's most mysterious, tragic stories. For decades they were infamous as the region's most militarized and repressed societies, self-isolated and under sanctions by the international community while, from Singapore to Japan, the rest of Asia saw historic wealth creation and growing middle class security. For Burma, the threat was internal: insurgent factions clashed with the government and each other. For North Korea, it was external: a hostile superpower--the United States--and a far more successful rival state--South Korea--occupying half of the Korean peninsula. Over time, Myanmar defeated its enemies, giving it space to explore a form of democratization and openness that has led to reintegration into international society. Meanwhile, North Korea's regime believes its nuclear arsenal--the primary reason for their pariah status--is vital to survival.

The Aesthetic Paths of Philosophy Presentation in Kant, Heidegger, Lacoue-Labarthe, and Nancy
Free Download The Aesthetic Paths of Philosophy: Presentation in Kant, Heidegger, Lacoue-Labarthe, and Nancy By Alison Ross
2007 | 256 Pages | ISBN: 080475487X | PDF | 15 MB
This book examines the ways that Heidegger, Lacoue-Labarthe, and Nancy adopt and reconfigure the Kantian understanding of "aesthetic presentation." In Kant, "aesthetic presentation" is understood in a technical sense as a specific mode of experience within a typology of different spheres of experience. This study argues that Heidegger, Lacoue-Labarthe, and Nancy generalize the elements of this specific mode of experience so that the aesthetic attitude and the vocabulary used by Kant to describe it are brought to bear on things in general. The book goes beyond documenting the well-known influence of Kant's Critique of Judgment, however, to open up a new way of approaching some of the central issues in post-Kantian thought―including why it is that art, the art work, and the aesthetic are still available as a vehicle of critique even, or especially, after Auschwitz. It shows that a genealogy of contemporary theory needs to look at the question of presentation, which has arguably been a question that has worried philosophy from its very beginning.
