To Serve and Protect The History of Policing
Free Download Lionel Pender, "To Serve and Protect: The History of Policing "
English | ISBN: 150810381X | 2016 | pages | EPUB | 13 MB
The history of policing dates back to antiquity, when great civilizations such as Egypt, Greece, and Rome developed the first systems to enforce public order. In the time since, countries have developed modern, efficient, and professional police forces to help catch criminals and impose order in the streets. This guide covers the history and development of policing activity, complementing the story of law enforcement with discussions of the theorists and lawmakers who most influenced its evolution. The text also focuses on the two greatest crises faced by law enforcement today: the rise of terrorism and tensions with racial minorities.

Exporting British Policing is a comprehensive study of British military policing in liberated Europe during the Second World War. Preventing and detecting thefts, receiving and profiteering together with the maintenance of order in its broadest sense are, in the peacetime world, generally confided to the police. However, the Second World War witnessed the use of civilian police to create a detective division of the British Army's Military Police (SIB), and the use of British civilian police, alongside American police, as Civil Affairs Officers to restore order and civil administration.

Gender and Policing in Early Modern England
Free Download Gender and Policing in Early Modern England
English | 2023 | ISBN: 100930514X | 266 Pages | PDF | 1.5 MB
This book traces the beginnings of a shift from one model of gendered power to another. Over the course of the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, traditional practices of local government by heads of household began to be undermined by new legal ideas about what it meant to hold office. In London, this enabled the emergence of a new kind of officeholding and a new kind of policing, rooted in a fraternal culture of official masculinity. London officers arrested, searched, and sometimes assaulted people on the basis of gendered suspicions, especially poorer women. Gender and Policing in Early Modern England describes how a recognisable form of gendered policing emerged from practices of local government by patriarchs and addresses wider questions about the relationship between gender and the state.

Policing Pregnancy The Law and Ethics of Obstetric Conflict
Free Download Policing Pregnancy: The Law and Ethics of Obstetric Conflict By Sheena Meredith
2005 | 272 Pages | ISBN: 075464412X | PDF | 4 MB
Are pregnant women entitled to the same rights of self-determination and bodily integrity as other adults? This is the fundamental question underlying recent high-profile legal interventions in situations when pregnant women and healthcare staff do not agree on management options or appropriate behaviour. Courts on both sides of the Atlantic have sometimes answered that they are not, and the law has at times been manipulated to enforce compliance with medical recommendations. This is the first book of its kind to offer a comprehensive assessment of healthcare law as applied to the unique situation of pregnancy. Drawing on case material from both the UK and the USA, it describes the trend towards 'policing pregnancy' and explores the emergence of the concept of 'maternal-foetal conflict' - and why, in the author's view, this would be more appropriately labelled 'obstetric conflict'. Suggestions are made for alternative approaches that better safeguard the overall well-being of pregnant women and their future children.

Policing race, ethnicity and culture Ethnographic perspectives across Europe
Free Download Jan Beek, "Policing race, ethnicity and culture: Ethnographic perspectives across Europe"
English | ISBN: 1526165589 | 2023 | 352 pages | PDF | 6 MB
How to deal with differences based on culture, ethnicity and race, has become a key issue of policing. This edited collected explores everyday, often mundane interactions between police officers and migrantised actors in European countries and asks how both sides deal with perceived differences. The contributions reflect that such differences are not just 'out there' but are being situationally (re-)produced in police-citizen encounters. By taking a comparative approach, the book develops a distinctly European perspective on these questions. The book contains 12 ethnographies from ten European countries, based on new and often innovative empirical research, two theoretical contributions, an introduction and a postface.

Policing Welfare Punitive Adversarialism in Public Assistance
Free Download Spencer Headworth, "Policing Welfare: Punitive Adversarialism in Public Assistance"
English | ISBN: 022677936X | 2021 | 303 pages | EPUB | 640 KB
Means-tested government assistance in the United States requires recipients to meet certain criteria and continue to maintain their eligibility so that benefits are paid to the "truly needy." Welfare is regarded with such suspicion in this country that considerable resources are spent policing the boundaries of eligibility, which are delineated by an often confusing and baroque set of rules and regulations. Even minor infractions of the many rules can cause people to be dropped from these programs, and possibly face criminal prosecution. In this book, Spencer Headworth offers the first study of the structure of fraud control in the welfare system by examining the relations between different levels of governmental agencies, from federal to local, and their enforcement practices.
