The majority of humanity have lived out their lives in a 'rural' context, and even in our increasingly urbanised world almost half of the global population still live in rural areas. In the European Iron Age, the vast mass of the population clearly lived in small hamlets and farmsteads, and this overarching 'rurality' is important for understanding these societies. While there has been a pronounced focus in recent archaeological research on patterns of centralisation and urbanisation, there is a need to reincorporate 'rural life' or rurality into these discussions of how people lived.

The Early Medieval Settlement Remains from Flixborough, Lincolnshire The Occupation Sequence, c. AD 600-1000
David Atkinson, "The Early Medieval Settlement Remains from Flixborough, Lincolnshire: The Occupation Sequence, c. AD 600-1000 "
English | ISBN: 1842172557 | 2007 | 208 pages | PDF | 6 MB
Between 1989 and 1991, excavations in the parish of Flixborough, North Lincolnshire, unearthed remains of an Anglo-Saxon settlement associated with one of the largest collections of artefacts and animal bones yet found on such a site. In an unprecedented occupation sequence from an Anglo-Saxon rural settlement, six main periods of occupation have been identified, dating from the seventh to the early eleventh centuries; with a further period of activity, between the twelfth and fifteenth centuries AD. The remains of approximately forty buildings and other structures were uncovered; and due to the survival of large refuse deposits, huge quantities of artefacts and faunal remains were encountered compared with most other rural settlements of the period. The quality of the overall archaeological data contained within the settlement sequence is important for both the examination of site-specific issues, and for the investigation of wider research themes and problems, facing settlement studies in England, between AD 600 and 1050. Volume 1 focuses on the occupation sequence, looking at the structural and stratigraphical evidence from the site, and interpreting the changing use of the site during its lengthy occupation. This interpretation of the occupation sequence forms the basis for all thematic discussions in Volumes 3 and 4. It also examines the evidence for burials at the site, and places this into the wider context of sepulchral practices in mid and late Saxon England. Finally there is discussion of the osteological remains themselves, giving hints of the demographic spectrum of the inhabitants, their lifestyles and ailments.

Migration, Settlement, and the Concepts of House and Home
Migration, Settlement, and the Concepts of House and Home By Iris Levin
2015 | 254 Pages | ISBN: 0415720680 | PDF | 4 MB
How do migrants feel "at home" in their houses? Literature on the migrant house and its role in the migrant experience of home-building is inadequate. This book offers a theoretical framework based on the notion of home-building and the concepts of home and house embedded within it. It presents innovative research on four groups of migrants who have settled in two metropolitan cities in two periods: migrants from Italy (migrated in the 1950s and 1960s) and from mainland China (migrated in the 1990s and 2000s) in Melbourne, Australia, and migrants from Morocco (migrated in the 1950s and 1960s) and from the former Soviet Union (migrated in the 1990s and 2000s) in Tel Aviv, Israel. The analysis draws on qualitative data gathered from forty-six in depth interviews with migrants in their home-environments, including extensive visual data. Levin argues that the physical form of the house is meaningful in a range of diverse ways during the process of home-building, and that each migrant group constructs a distinct form of home-building in their homes/houses, according to their specific circumstances of migration, namely the origin country, country of destination and period of migration, as well as the historical, economic and social contexts around migration.

After the Flight The Dynamics of Refugee Settlement and Integration
Morgan Poteet, Shiva Nourpanah, "After the Flight: The Dynamics of Refugee Settlement and Integration"
English | 2016 | ISBN: 144389074X | PDF | pages: 315 | 3.5 mb
Knowledge of the integration process for refugees is often subsumed under the broader category of immigrants. This book focuses on this process for refugees, including the structural and systemic challenges they face as they integrate in their new host societies, and how they respond to such challenges. The book provides a critical analysis of Canadas approach to integrating refugees with additional chapters focused on refugee integration in Australia, Northern Ireland, and the United States. This collection of work critically addresses a range of topics and employs a variety of qualitative approaches to gain a better understanding of the lived experience of integration for refugees, including the ways in which refugees view integration and the attendant challenges and opportunities encountered during the integration process. Departing from viewing refugees as a burden that must be shared by the international community, the contributors to this collection explore the complex dynamics of race, class, gender, ethnicity, age, generation and legal status for refugees in a selection of local contexts of reception. The work begins a dialogue about the long-term dynamics of refugee settlement and integration with implications for the viability of future resettlement programs and practices. How the world responds to the ongoing plight of the growing numbers of displaced people will be a defining feature of the contemporary global order. This collection shifts the discourse about refugees from one of victimhood to one of refugee agency and rights. The book will be of primary interest to academics in the field of refugee and migration studies, to practitioners in the settlement sector, and to those involved in making refugee policies. It will also be useful for those who work in social services and education in countries of the global north that receive refugees and refugee claimants, and anyone with an interest in refugee lives.
