Theology and Survival Movies
Free Download Ioan Buteanu, "Theology and Survival Movies "
English | ISBN: 1032387203 | 2023 | 242 pages | PDF | 3 MB
This book provides an innovative analysis of the survival movie genre from an Orthodox Christian anthropological perspective. Grounded in the Orthodox tradition, the approach builds from the first chapter of Genesis where man is described as made in the 'image' and after the 'likeness' of God. It offers a nuanced theological exploration of the concept of the survival movie and examines a number of significant cinematic creations, illustrating how issues of survival intersect romantic, Western, science fiction and war films. The author reflects on how survival movies offer a path for the study of human nature given they depict people in crisis situations where they may reveal their true characters. As well as discussing the role of a 'limit situation' as a narrative element, the book highlights the spiritual aspect of survival and points to the common hope in survival movies for something more than biological survival. It is valuable reading for scholars working in the field of religion and film.

The Vitality of Evangelical Theology Celebrating Etf Leuven at 40
Free Download A. J. Beck, "The Vitality of Evangelical Theology: Celebrating Etf Leuven at 40 "
English | ISBN: 9042948868 | 2022 | 271 pages | PDF | 7 MB
This volume presents the research activities of Evangelische Theologische Faculteit Leuven during the last four decades: a faculty with its location rooted in the heart of Europe and its nature connected to an international academic community. For 40 years now, ETF Leuven is a place where researchers from different cultural and denominational backgrounds and different parts of the world engage in evangelical theology. Through an Introduction and no fewer than eighteen chapters, this volume shows how ETF Leuven fosters a connection between academic research and faithful engagement with faith communities. Each of its six departments discusses past research activities and presents two samples of current research. Nevertheless, the different contributions do not just inform the reader about the essential mission of a theological faculty. This volume offers much more. Taken together, the contributions reflect the vitality of evangelical, and more broadly Christian theology as a benefit to both church and society, particularly in a time when academic theology seems to be vulnerable. The volume includes a foreword by Prof. Miroslav Volf, who interprets the narrative of ETF Leuven within the larger field of academic theology.

Theology as Hermeneutics Rudolf Bultmann's Interpretation of the History of Jesus
Free Download John Painter, "Theology as Hermeneutics: Rudolf Bultmann's Interpretation of the History of Jesus "
English | ISBN: 1474231667 | 2015 | 272 pages | PDF | 53 MB
Rudolf Bultmann was the most significant New Testament scholar we have known in the twentieth century. This study approaches his work arguing that his theology can only be understood correctly as an interpretation of the New Testament. Naturally it is a twentieth-century interpretation involving complex hermeneutical questions. But it is the New Testament which provides the subject matter to be interpreted. Bultmann's theology, stemming from the conviction that the New Testament addresses the present age, offers important solutions to many problems for Christian theology in our materialistic, relativist, pluralistic age. The book introduces the reader to: Bultmann's theology; the problem of contemporary New Testament hermeneutics; the problems of New Testament theology; the question of the relation of New Testament theology to theology as such. It makes a necessary critique of simplistic modes of interpreting Bultmann, and shows a masterly hand in assessing his continuing significance.

Dictionary of Dogmatic Theology
Free Download Dictionary of Dogmatic Theology By Pietro Parente; Antonio Piolante; Salvatore Garafalo
2013 | 336 Pages | ISBN: 1493695401 | PDF | 58 MB
For those Catholics, who wish to go beyond the Catechism but not dive into deep theological works, this book was prepared. It is for the knowledgable layman and serves as an excellent companion to those wishing to do research along side The Sources of Catholic Dogma and Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma. It is not in order to follow the fashion of our hurried day with its predilection for outlines, condensations, and telegraphic style, but to fill the need of a class of Christians for whom the catechism is too little and theology too much, that we have set about compiling this brief DICTIONARY OF DOGMATIC THEOLOGY for laymen. It should be judged according to its purpose: choice of the entries and their development, style, bibliography - all must be considered in relation to the reader, who is the cultured layman. To achieve brevity and clarity, we have sacrificed erudition, dialectic virtuosity, technical formalism, and many other things. What we have set our hearts on doing is to enlighten the mind of the reader by presenting the substance of dogmatic doctrine in a form that is pleasing to the nontheologian and that conveys synthetically but faithfully the riches hidden in the scholastic formulas. Both the choice of entries and their manner of treatment prove difficult in works of this kind. It has been our desire, in this first attempt, to present an all-inclusive work, but we do not presume to have successfully accomplished this end. The readers will judge and their observations and suggestions will be a guide in any future attempts. Two able colleagues have collaborated with me, and others have been generous in their counsels: Professor Piolanti, whose name I wish to place next to my own, has treated the sacramental and ecclesiastical material. We indulge the hope that our labor is not in vain.

Divine Light Theology of Denys the Areopagite
Free Download Divine Light: Theology of Denys the Areopagite By William K. Riordan
2008 | 293 Pages | ISBN: 1586171208 | EPUB | 1 MB
In his missionary journeys, St. Paul spoke in a number of cities in the Greek peninsula including Athens, renowned for its philosophical heritage. He addressed to them the message of the One, Unknown God (Acts 17:22ff). Among those present in the Areopagus (the open city center of Athens) on that day was a certain Denys (Dionysios) who eventually became a disciple of Paul.Centuries later, a corpus of writings appeared bearing the name of the Denys the Areopagite. These texts were considered to be the writings of the first century disciple of the Apostle Paul and thus achieved almost immediate prominence, strongly influencing the lives of St. Maximus the Confessor (d. 662) and St. John Damascene (d.749) in the East and Eriugena (d. 877), St. Bede (d. 735), St. Bernard (d.1153) St. Thomas Aquinas (d. 1272) Nicholas of Cusa (d. 1464), St. John of the Cross (d. 1591), and many other great minds in the West.Later historical studies of Denys' texts, especially during the 19th century, showed conclusively that the writings are of a later date (5th century) than had generally been thought. Hence, the appending of "Pseudo-" before the name of Denys (Pseudo-Denys, Pseudo-Dionysius) became common place. The extraordinary brilliance of the texts themselves, however, has been in no way dimmed. The late Holy Father John Paul II in his monumental encyclicalFides et Ratiowarns insistently against an approach to Revelation that shuns metaphysics. The texts of Denys provide a majestic and profound metaphysical perspective. Deeply formed by the Divine Liturgy and the Sacred Scriptures, this mysterious author uses the great insights of Plato and his later disciples, expressing the deepest profundities of the faith in stunningly beautiful writings. In Denys, readers past, present, and future find a penetrating contemplative vision into the Mystery of the Trinity and its creation. This book is a focused exposition of Denys' theological understanding with particular attention to the illuminating metaphysical depth of his insight. Care has been taken to prepare a text that is readable for the serious laymen accompanied with footnotes to provide a more detailed background for the scholar.
