Free Download Shackleton Boys: True Stories from the Home-Based 'Kipper Fleet' Squadrons by Steve Bond
English | September 27, 2018 | ISBN: 1911621122 | 256 pages | EPUB | 6.99 Mb
Essentially a development of the Avro Lancaster via the later Lincoln, the Avro Shackleton was the RAF's first line of defence in the maritime role from 1951 for twenty years, thereafter continuing to serve as an airborne early warning aircraft for another twenty, until 1991. The 'Old Grey Lady', the 'Growler', '20,000 rivets in loose formation', but mostly known simply as the 'Shack', it is viewed with great affection by those who flew and maintained it. In addition to its traditional sub-hunting role, it was also used extensively for search and rescue operations, and even as a conventional bomber in the Aden theatre. Operating around the world with squadrons based in the UK, the Mediterranean, Middle East and Far East, 'Shacks' were also used to support the blockade of oil supplies to Rhodesia during the UDI crisis in the '60s and '70s, and searching for gun-running boats during the Indonesian Confrontation. All of the Boys' stories are from air and ground crew veterans themselves, and because there are so many vital and entertaining accounts, Steve Bond has divided his subject into two volumes. Consequently this volume will cover UK-based units flying from Ballykelly (including Aldergrove), Farnborough, Honington, Kinloss, Lossiemouth, St Eval and St Mawgan, plus many overseas detachments including Christmas Island and Majunga. To complement the detailed personal accounts and anecdotes are hundreds of original photographs and extensive appendices. A feast for any 'Shack' or military aviation aficionado. Volume Two (coming in 2019) will cover those units based overseas at Changi, Gan, Gibraltar, Khormaksar, Luqa (and Hal Far), and Sharjah, plus the South African Air Force operations from Ysterplaat/Malan.

Free Download Megan Kate Nelson, "Ruin Nation: Destruction and the American Civil War"
English | 2012 | ISBN: 0820342513, 0820333972 | PDF | pages: 353 | 6.5 mb
During the Civil War, cities, houses, forests, and soldiers' bodies were transformed into "dead heaps of ruins," novel sights in the southern landscape. How did this happen, and why? And what did Americans―northern and southern, black and white, male and female―make of this proliferation of ruins? Ruin Nation is the first book to bring together environmental and cultural histories to consider the evocative power of ruination as an imagined state, an act of destruction, and a process of change.

English | 2019 | ISBN: 0813389275, 0367285614, 0813389194 | EPUB | pages: 277 | 1.3 mb
In this volume, distinguished French and U.S. historians, economists, and political scientists explore the dimensions of France's current crisis of identity. Although every European nation has been adjusting to the dramatic transformations on the continent since the end of the Cold War, France's struggle to adapt has been particularly difficult. Responding to a mix of external and internal pressures, the nation is now questioning many basic assumptions about how France should be governed, what the objectives of national policies should be, and ultimately what it means to be French.

Free Download Liam O'Dowd, Martina McKnight, "Religion, Violence and Cities"
English | 2015 | ISBN: 1138379514 | EPUB | pages: 138 | 1.3 mb
In exploring the connections between religion, violence and cities, the book probes the extent to which religion moderates or exacerbates violence in an increasingly urbanised world. Originating in a five year research project , Conflict in Cities and the Contested State, concerned with Belfast, Jerusalem and other ethno-nationally divided cities, this volume widens the geographical focus to include diverse cities from the Balkans, the Middle East, Nigeria and Japan. In addressing the understudied triangular relationships between religion, violence and cities, contributors stress the multiple forms taken by religion and violence while challenging the compartmentalisation of two highly topical debates - links between religion and violence on the one hand, and the proliferation of violent urban conflicts on the other hand. Their research demonstrates why cities have become so important in conflicts driven by state-building, fundamentalism, religious nationalism, and ethno-religious division and illuminates the conditions under which urban environments can fuel violent conflicts while simultaneously providing opportunities for managing or transforming them.
