Focusing on the highly diverse Karenni refugee population living in camps on the Thai-Burma border, this innovative book explores materiality, embodiment, memory, imagination, and identity among refugees, providing new and important ways of understanding how refugees make sense of experience, self, and other. It examines how and to what ends refugees perceive, represent, manipulate, use as metaphor, and otherwise engage with material objects and spaces, and includes a focus on the real and metaphorical journeys that bring about and perpetuate exile.

English | ISBN: 1441124470 | 2014 | 336 pages | PDF | 5 MB
The history of cinema charts multiple histories of exile. From the German émigrés in 1930s Hollywood to today's Iranian filmmakers in Europe and the United States, these histories continue to exert a profound influence on the evolution of cinematic narratives and aesthetics. But while the effect of exile and diaspora on film practice has been fruitfully explored from both historical and contemporary perspectives, the issues raised by return, whether literal or metaphorical, have yet to be fully considered.

Displacement and Exile The State–Refugee Relations in India
Free Download Displacement and Exile: The State-Refugee Relations in India By Abhijit Dasgupta
2016 | 288 Pages | ISBN: 0199461171 | PDF | 2 MB
This study highlights some emerging issues in the study of displaced persons in India, like the agency and voices of people who flee across an international border, the identities they forge for themselves, their relations with the hosts and their interactions with the state and non-governmental organizations. Three case studies are examined here: (a). aPartition refugeesa, from East Pakistan to West Bengal, (b). Tamil refugees, from Sri Lanka to India and (c). Bangladesh Liberation War refugees from East Pakistan to West Bengal. The reader will find that each case is in itself highly complex. The treatment meted out to the displaced people in India has not been consistent. This study shows that the responses of the state to cross-border displacement have been varied over time and space. The Indian state has sovereign rights to decide who is to be considered as a refugee, who should receive relief and rehabilitation and who is to be repatriated. In the absence of national laws for the refugees in India, the state is the final arbitrator on all such matters.

From Eden to Exile The Five-Thousand-Year History of the People of the Bible
Free Download David Rohl, "From Eden to Exile: The Five-Thousand-Year History of the People of the Bible"
English | ISBN: 1882514580 | 2009 | 528 pages | PDF | 75 MB
David Rohl retells the history of the Old Testament, using the latest in archeological research and incorporating the revised "New Chronology" for the ancient world. The strength and brilliance of Rohl's narrative is his "New Chronology" for Egypt. The traditional chronology yields no evidence of the Jews' sojourn in Egypt, or the Exodus, or the Conquest, or even of the flourishing of the nation of Israel under David and Solomon. Rohl, based on new archeological and textual evidence, revises the chronology. He goes back and looks at the same places, but at different times, and finds countless confirmations of the details of the biblical account. His history of both Egypt and Israel is "satisfyingly supported by the stratigraphic record and colorfully enhanced by the contemporary texts of Israel's powerful neighbors. It provides a solid and ultimately believable historical foundation for thereligious messages of the biblical text." The book is beautifully laid out and illustrated with maps derived from satellite photography as well as stunning photographs of ancient artifacts. It is also brilliantly written. Rohl has a knack for taking the details of archeology and explaining sophisticated concepts and analyses in ways that a layman can easily understand. The result is an engaging book that will change the way you think about the Bible.

Exile in Colonial Asia Kings, Convicts, Commemoration
Free Download Anand A. Yang, Kieko Matteson, "Exile in Colonial Asia: Kings, Convicts, Commemoration"
English | 2016 | pages: 307 | ISBN: 0824883144, 0824853741 | PDF | 20,4 mb
Exile was a potent form of punishment and a catalyst for change in colonial Asia between the seventeenth and early twentieth centuries. Vast networks of forced migration supplied laborers to emerging colonial settlements, while European powers banished rivals to faraway locations. Exile in Colonial Asia explores the phenomenon of exile in ten case studies by way of three categories: "kings," royals banished as political exiles; "convicts," the vast majority of those whose lives are explored in this volume, sent halfway across the world with often unexpected consequences; and "commemoration," referring to the myriad ways in which the experience and its aftermath were remembered by those exiled, relatives left behind, colonial officials, and subsequent generations of descendants, devotees, historians, and politicians. Intended for a broad readership interested in the colonial period in Asia (South and Southeast Asia in particular), the volume encompasses a range of disciplinary perspectives: anthropology, gender studies, literature, history, and Asian, Australian, and Pacific studies.
