The Fall of Humankind and Social Progress
Free Download Arttu Mäkipää, "The Fall of Humankind and Social Progress "
English | ISBN: 1032434090 | 2023 | 276 pages | PDF | 9 MB
This book investigates the link between human capabilities and the preconditions for social progress through an engagement with the theological anthropology of Swiss theologian Emil Brunner (1889-1966). It places Brunner's thought in dialogue with selected contributors from the contemporary social sciences, examining approaches from economics, sociology and philosophy as put forward by Gary S. Becker, Christian Smith and Martha Nussbaum. This dialogic format helps to crystallise both agreements and differences and thus facilitate greater understanding between theology and other disciplines. Questions explored in the discussion relate to the emergence of human nature (the person) and the capabilities human beings possess, as well as how these develop in a social context. The author focuses in particular on the impact of sin (the Fall) and considers the mixed blessings of economic progress. By providing pointers on how to bring back the human person in social disciplines, the book hopes to contribute to improved understanding of the ethical dimension of social progress and human flourishing. It will be of particular interest to scholars of analytic and systematic theology, but also scholars from economics and social sciences with openness to theological engagement.

The Chevron Doctrine Its Rise and Fall, and the Future of the Administrative State [Audiobook]

English | ASIN: B0C9VVVFN9 | 2023 | 12 hours and 41 minutes | M4B@64 kbps | 365 MB
Author: Thomas W. Merrill
Narrator: Mike Chamberlain

The Constitution makes Congress the principal federal lawmaker. Power has inevitably shifted to the executive branch agencies that interpret laws already on the books and to the courts that review the agencies' interpretations. Since the Supreme Court's 1984 decision in Chevron v. Natural Resources Defense Council, this judicial review has been highly deferential: courts must uphold agency interpretations of unclear laws as long as these interpretations are "reasonable." But the Chevron doctrine faces backlash from constitutional scholars and, now, from Supreme Court justices who insist that courts, not administrative agencies, have the authority to say what the law is.

The Fall of Tsarism Untold Stories of the February 1917 Revolution
Free Download The Fall of Tsarism: Untold Stories of the February 1917 Revolution By Semion Lyandres
2013 | 352 Pages | ISBN: 0199235759 | PDF | 4 MB
The Fall of Tsarism reveals to the world for the first time a unique selection of interviews with leading participants in the February Revolution in Petrograd, sources that have been hidden for most of a century. Focusing on the pivotal period between the outbreak of the popular uprising on 27 February 1917 and the fall of the Russian monarchy five days later, these gripping, plain-spoken testimonies take the reader directly to the revolutionary headquarters inside the Tauride Palace. The interviews present wide-ranging perspectives on the events, politics, and personalities of the February Days from a diverse group of key political figures as well as lesser-known activists, including: M.V. Rodzianko, the conservative president of the last Imperial Duma; P.V. Gerasimov, the liberal Duma deputy; N.S. Chkheidze, leading Menshevik and the first chairman of the Petrograd Soviet; A.F. Kerenskii, the future revolutionary premier; and M.I. Tereshchenko, the 'repentant capitalist' and Provisional Government minister.Recorded between 1 May and 7 June 1917, months before the Bolshevik takeover -at a time when the outcome of the revolution was far from obvious - the interviews are free of any post-1917 hindsight and represent the most significant contemporary testimony on the overthrow of Europe's last old regime. The original transcripts, which remained in private hands between 1917 and 2006, appear here for the first time. The story of the interviews is told in the introduction, including their incredible survival through many of the twentieth-century's wars and revolutions. The book also contains historical annotations, short biographical sketches on the interviewees, rare illustrations, maps, a glossary, and a chronology of events, placing this unique documentary collection in its wider historical context.

Pedro Casciaro was one of the earliest members of Opus Dei, the Catholic organization founded by St. Josemaría Escrivá in 1928. Casciaro joined Opus Dei in 1935 at the age of 20. He lived beside the founder during the difficult years of the Spanish civil war and was ordained in 1946. He had become one of St. Josemaría's most trusted aides in the worldwide development of Opus Dei.In this book Fr. Casciaro reveals for the first time his personal recollections of Opus Dei's founder, which span a period of forty years. "He brings us a vivid narrative, written with a tremendous sense of humor which highlights our founder's human and supernatural traits," comments Bishop Echevarría, the Prelate of Opus Dei. "As can readily be imagined, these pages are invaluable..."When Pedro Casciaro died in Mexico in 1995, he realized he had been able to savor the truth encapsulated in those words St. Josemaría had whispered to him some sixty years earlier: Dream, and your dreams will fall short..
