Naming, Defining, Phrasing Strong Asymmetrical Dependencies A Textual Approach

English | ISBN: 3111200701, 9783111200705 | 2023 | 320 pages | PDF, EPUB | 29 + 4 MB
An examination of the terms used in specific historical contexts to refer to those people in a society who can be categorized as being in a position of 'strong asymmetrical dependency' (including slavery) provides insights into the social categories and distinctions that informed asymmetrical social interactions. In a similar vein, an analysis of historical narratives that either justify or challenge dependency is conducive to revealing how dependency may be embedded in (historical) discourses and ways of thinking. The eleven contributions in the volume approach these issues from various disciplinary vantage points, including theology, global history, Ottoman history, literary studies, and legal history. The authors address a wide range of different textual sources and historical contexts - from medieval Scandinavia and the Fatimid Empire to the history of abolition in Martinique and human rights violations in contemporary society. While the authors contribute innovative insights to ongoing discussions within their disciplines, the articles were also written with a view to the endeavor of furthering Dependency Studies as a transdisciplinary approach to the study of human societies past and present.

Naming God Addressing the Divine in Philosophy, Theology and Scripture
Free Download Janet Soskice, "Naming God: Addressing the Divine in Philosophy, Theology and Scripture"
English | ISBN: 1108834469 | 2023 | 256 pages | PDF | 1015 KB
Generations of Christians, Janet Soskice demonstrates, once knew God and Christ by hundreds of remarkable names. These included the appellations 'Messiah', 'Emmanuel', 'Alpha', 'Omega', 'Eternal', 'All-Powerful', 'Lamb', 'Lion', 'Goat', 'One', 'Word', 'Serpent' and 'Bridegroom'. In her much-anticipated new book, Soskice argues that contemporary understandings of divinity could be transformed by a return to a venerable analogical tradition of divine naming. These ancient titles - drawn from scripture - were chanted and sung, crafted and invoked (in polyphony and plainsong) as they were woven into the worship of the faithful. However, during the sixteenth century Descartes moved from 'naming' to 'defining' God via a series of metaphysical attributes. This made God a thing among things: a being amongst beings. For the author, reclaiming divine naming is not only overdue. It can also re-energize the relationship between philosophy and religious tradition. This path-breaking book shows just how rich and revolutionary such reclamation might be.

Place Naming, Identities and Geography
Free Download Place Naming, Identities and Geography: Critical Perspectives in a Globalizing and Standardizing World
English | 2023 | ISBN: 3031215095 | 656 Pages | PDF (True) | 21 MB
This book presents research on geographical naming on land and sea from a wide range of standpoints on: theory and concepts, case studies and education. Space and place naming or toponymy has a long tradition in the sciences and a renewed critical interest in geography and allied disciplines including the humanities. Place: location and cartographical aspects, etymology and geo-histories so salient in past studies, are now being enhanced from a range of radical perspectives, especially in a globalizing, standardizing world with Googlization and the consequent 'normalization' of place names, perceptions and images worldwide including those for marketing purposes. Nonetheless, there are conflicting and contesting voices. The interdisciplinary research is enhanced with authors from regional, national and international toponymy-related institutions and organizations including the UNGEGN, IGU, ICA and so forth.

Naming the Local Medicine, Language, and Identity in Korea Since the Fifteenth Century
Free Download Naming the Local: Medicine, Language, and Identity in Korea Since the Fifteenth Century By Soyoung Suh
2017 | 244 Pages | ISBN: 0674976967 | PDF | 4 MB
Naming the Local uncovers how Koreans domesticated foreign medical novelties on their own terms, while simultaneously modifying the Korea-specific expressions of illness and wellness to make them accessible to the wider network of scholars and audiences.Due to Korea's geopolitical position and the intrinsic tension of medicine's efforts to balance the local and the universal, Soyung Suh argues that Koreans' attempts to officially document indigenous categories in a particular linguistic form required constant negotiation of their own conceptual boundaries against the Chinese, Japanese, and American authorities that had largely shaped the medical knowledge grid. The birth, decline, and afterlife of five terminologies--materia medica, the geography of the medical tradition, the body, medical commodities, and illness--illuminate an irresolvable dualism at the heart of the Korean endeavor to name the indigenous attributes of medicine.By tracing Korean-educated agents' efforts to articulate the vernacular nomenclature of medicine over time, this book examines the limitations and possibilities of creating a mode of "Koreanness" in medicine--and the Korean manifestation of cultural and national identities.
