Precolonial Legacies in Postcolonial Politics Representation and Redistribution in Decentralized West Africa
Free Download Martha Wilfahrt, "Precolonial Legacies in Postcolonial Politics: Representation and Redistribution in Decentralized West Africa "
English | ISBN: 1316518159 | 2021 | 300 pages | PDF | 11 MB
Why are some communities able to come together to improve their collective lot while others are not? Looking at variation in local government performance in decentralized West Africa, this book advances a novel answer to this question: communities are better able to coordinate around basic service delivery when their formal jurisdictional boundaries overlap with informal social institutions, or norms. This book identifies the precolonial past as the driver of striking subnational variation in the present because these social institutions only encompass the many villages of the local state in areas that were once home to precolonial polities. Drawing on a multi-method research design, the book develops and tests a theory of institutional congruence to document how the past shapes contemporary elite approaches to redistribution within the local state. Where precolonial kingdoms left behind collective identities and dense social networks, local elites find it easier to cooperate following decentralization.

Colonial and Postcolonial South Asia
Free Download Catherine Ellis, "Colonial and Postcolonial South Asia "
English | ISBN: 1508104409 | 2016 | pages | EPUB | 11 MB
Much of East Asia and Southeast Asia were unaffected by colonialism until the 19th century, when European nations, the United States, and Japan spread their influence and control throughout the continent of Asia. This resource traces the impact of foreign rule on the region, gaining insight into the many wars and policies that affected the local people, economy, and society. Though most of the modern-day countries of East and Southeast Asia gained independence in the wake of World War II, when Japan was defeated and the Allied powers began to lose control of their colonies, the impact of colonialism lingers on.

Clearing a Space Postcolonial Readings of Modern Indonesian Literature
Free Download T Day, "Clearing a Space: Postcolonial Readings of Modern Indonesian Literature"
English | 2002 | pages: 392 | ISBN: 9067181897 | PDF | 52,4 mb
This collection draws together the work of authors from Indonesia, Australia, North America, and Europe, in the first comprehensive attempt to relate modern Indonesian literature to the insights and approaches of postcolonial theory and literary criticism. The essays in the collection range over the history of modern Indonesian literature from its beginnings in the late nineteenth century to its diversity and growth in the 1990s. Some offer the fresh readings of well-known texts; others draw attention to aspects of the Indonesian literary tradition that have hitherto escaped the notice of scholars and critics. Grounded in detailed analysis of local contexts, yet enlivened by comparative and theoretical perspectives, the collection places Indonesian literature at the heart of contemporary cultural concerns.

Autobiography as a Writing Strategy in Postcolonial Literature
Free Download Autobiography as a Writing Strategy in Postcolonial Literature By Benaouda Lebdai
2015 | 185 Pages | ISBN: 1443871575 | PDF | 3 MB
Autobiography, a fully-recognised genre within mainstream literature today, has evolved massively in the last few decades, particularly through colonial and postcolonial texts. By using autobiography as a means of expression, many postcolonial writers were able to describe their experiences in the face of the denial of personal expression for centuries. This book is centred around the recounting and analysis of such a phenomenon. Literary purists often reject autobiography as a fully-fledged literary genre, perceiving it rather as a mere life report or a descriptive diary. The colonial and postcolonial autobiographical texts analysed in this book refute such perceptions, and demonstrate a subtle combination of literary qualities and the recounting of real-life experiences. Through its deployment of multiple uses of the 'I' and the 'me', autobiography has assumed its rightful place as a literary genre. As this book demonstrates, colonial and postcolonial texts in particular have established their 'literarity'. The need for postcolonial authors to express themselves as subjects and not as objects is the essence of this book, which confirms that self-affirmation through autobiographical writing is an art-form.

A Postcolonial Relationship Challenges of Asian Immigrants as the Third Other

English | ISBN: 1438486561 | 2022 | 192 pages | EPUB | 679 KB
A Postcolonial Relationship critically examines the problems of current US racial relations from an Asian immigrant perspective and provides a new understanding of the complications that Asian immigrant groups experience as the "third other." Choi Hee An dismantles black/white and native/alien binary concepts from an Asian immigrant perspective and explores the deeper understandings of postcolonial relationships that Asian immigrants face. By deconstructing black/white, native/alien, and host/guest binary divides, this book addresses the current structures of sociohistorical binary paradigms, investigates the unique challenges of Asian immigrant positions, analyzes the reality of their third otherness, and explores the possibilities of transforming binary relationships into postcolonial relationships based on ethical and theological religious traditions and practices in Asian immigrant contexts.

Free Download Literary Research and Postcolonial Literatures in English: Strategies and Sources By H. Faye Christenberry, Angela Courtney, Liorah Golomb
2012 | 278 Pages | ISBN: 081088383X | PDF | 7 MB
Postcolonial literatures can be defined as the body of creative work written by authors whose lands were formerly subjugated to colonial rule. In previous volumes of this series, the research literature of former British colonies Australia, Canada, Ireland, and New Zealand have been addressed. This volume offers guidance for those researching the postcolonial literature of the former British colonies in Africa, the Caribbean, and South Asia. Among the forty nations represented in this volume are South Africa, India, Pakistan, Ghana, Jamaica, Swaziland, Belize, and Namibia. With the exception of South Africa (which formed the Union of South Africa in 1910), this guide picks up its coverage in 1947, when both India and Pakistan gained their independence. The literature created by writers from these nations represents the diverse experiences in the postcolonial condition and are the subject of this book. The volume provides best-practice suggestions for the research process and discusses how to take advantage of primary text resources in a variety of formats, both digital and paper based: bibliographies, indexes, research guides, archives, special collections, and microforms.

The knowledge disseminated by universities and mobilized by states to govern populations has been globally dominant for more than a century. It first emerged in the early modern period in Europe and subsequently became globalized through colonialism. Despite the historical and cultural specificity of its origins, modern Western knowledge was thought to have transcended its particularities such that, unlike pre-modern and non-Western knowledges, it was "universal," or true for all times and places.
